The seed potato industry in brief*

Seed potato production relies on a network of 692 growers, 154 growers-sellers et 55 seed potato distributors as well as control organisation and diseases surveillance whose effectiveness is recognised throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Growers (or multipliers) are highly specialized. They are commissioned by contract with the distributors to produce the different generations of tubers up to the certified seed potato intented for marketing.

The seed potato production requires a high level of know-how and appropriate equipment for production and storage.

Production fields are set up by growers under a multiplication/production contract. The multiplication/production contract forms the basis of the relationship between the seed potato grower and the seed potato distributor, two of the main professions in the sector.

With 24.398 hectares under multiplication, 732.899 tons of seed potatoes produced and 243.930 tons exported, France is one of the world's leading players in the seed potato sector.

France is the world's 2nd largest producer and exporter.
